Is My Pokémon Card Worth Grading?
Professional grading may make sense for a card you want to preserve, document or sell, but there is no universal price threshold. Start with your goal, identify the exact card, inspect its condition and consider the total cost even if the final grade is lower than you hope.
Identify the exact card before comparing prices
Match the name, set, collector number, language, edition and finish. A regular holo, reverse holo and another print of the same illustration are not interchangeable comparisons. Use a catalog to narrow down the identity, then compare its details with your physical copy.
A catalog match is not an authenticity check. If you have doubts about the card’s origin or printing, resolve them with a qualified physical assessment before relying on price comparisons or an AI score.
Decide what you want grading to achieve
For a personal collection, sentimental value or a preference for a graded holder can matter more than resale. Decide whether the service and presentation fit how you want to keep the card. Professional grading is not the only way to store a card carefully.
If you intend to sell, consider whether buyers of that exact card seek graded copies and which service they use. A high listed price alone does not demonstrate demand. You may also prefer to keep the card ungraded so it remains available for your binder or play.
Assess condition without assuming the best grade
Inspect centering, corners, edges and surface on both sides. Note creases, dents, whitening, scratches and areas that are hard to judge. A rare card is not automatically in high-grade condition, and a recently opened card can still have flaws.
An AI estimate can help with preliminary screening, but the physical card may show defects the photos miss. Consider more than one plausible outcome, including a lower grade. Do not label an AI score as a certified grade or price the card as if that certification already existed.
Compare completed sales, not just asking prices
An asking price is what a seller hopes to receive. A completed comparable sale offers a different reference, but check the date, language, variant, condition and grading company. A sale in another currency or market may include different shipping charges and fees.
Compare ungraded copies with similar visible condition and certified copies across realistic grades. One unusually high sale is not a reliable baseline. If recent comparable sales are scarce, treat the possible resale value as uncertain rather than filling the gap with the highest listing. Pokedy’s price references are not guaranteed sale proceeds.
Check the full submission cost and constraints
Use the chosen company’s current official submission terms before sending a card. Costs and processes vary by service, destination and submission route; no fee or turnaround is assumed here. If using an intermediary, check their separate terms as well.
- Grading fee and any membership, minimum submission or service-level requirements.
- Outbound and return shipping, packaging, insurance and any applicable taxes or customs charges.
- Declared-value rules, possible additional charges, and what happens if a card is not assigned a grade.
- Estimated turnaround, time in transit, and the period when the card will be unavailable to you.
- Selling fees and shipping to a buyer if resale is your objective.
Make a decision that still works under uncertainty
Write down your goal, the visible condition, the all-in submission cost and the evidence behind your price assumptions. For a resale decision, subtract grading, transport and selling costs from plausible sale proceeds and compare that with keeping or selling the card ungraded. A favorable estimate is not a profit guarantee.
If the decision only works at the highest possible grade, pause and gather better evidence. If the card has personal value, decide whether the cost is acceptable even without a resale gain. Pokedy can keep the card in your collection and provide a preliminary photo estimate; the decision to seek professional certification remains yours.
Use a photo estimate alongside your inspection
Sign in or create an account, add the card to your collection if needed, select it, upload front and back photos, then launch the analysis and open the result.
Grade my cardPokedy helps you manage your collection and estimate visible condition from photos. An AI score is not an official PSA, BGS or CGC grade, an authenticity check, or a guarantee of a future grade or sale price. Check your available analyses in the grading tool.
